    Telling Time 1

    Haris: 5 Years

    Haris dah boleh baca jam by hour dan half an hour. Masih belum tahu minit dan saat.  Pukul 3. Pukul 3.30. But I never really properly introduced him about time. So, we discussed about seconds this morning. Macamana jarum saat tu pusing, cukupkan satu pusingan sebanyak 60 kali dan jarum panjang akan bergerak and told him that was minute and when the minute cukupkan satu pusingan pula, jadi jam.

    Activity:
    Put students in pairs. Use the timer. One student counts how many times their partner can clap in ten seconds. Then reverse the roles and do it again.
    Jog in place for one minute. Is a minute longer or shorter than a second? The minute hand goes around one time each minute.
    Now show your students that you are setting a timer for one hour. That means that the minute hand will go around sixty times. Ask them to predict what they will be doing when the timer goes off. Write down some predictions.

    Learning Arabic Alphabet

    This week, am going to focus on him recognising Hijaiyah letters. One of the activities is Bingo game taken from YemenLinks. Movable Arabic Letters untuk draw for Bingo dari Noorjanan.

    I’ve been reading her blog for this past week, and MashaAllah so many advices and tips from her. I feel enlighten reading her posts and makes me motivated more. Her blog is inactive now, and I’m going to miss her writings when I’m done with reading all of her posts. Lol.

    It’s fun, sebab round pertama main tak ada apa-apa reward. Haris won. Kedua, me won and set the rule siapa menang dapat makan Oreo. Lol. The look on his face! Tak puas hati. Haaa. Asyik mengerling dekat bekas Oreo. Ketiga, Haris menang and he said,

    “Neeq menang berapa kali tadi?”
    “Err, dua.”
    “So Haris dapat makan dualah!”

    Alhamdulillah semua sudah sihat. Tp weekend tu sempat lagi keluar. Muehehe. I think this is such a good buy, MashaAllah. I’ve been looking for a tray to use untuk learning.

    Tapi sebab belum finalise lagi Practical Life lesson dan materialsnya, jadi sementara, testing tray ni. Lol. Haris learning Math symbols, great, less & equal. Inspired by Living Montessori Now. At first, I showed him and explained to him the symbol. He showed no interest then, and it did seem that he didn’t really understand it. I tried this again a week later, tested him to put the symbol on the strip and he did it perfectly! That actually surprised me and I was really thrilled. He did it in breeze the first part of it. (No 1-10). *proud*

    Just so you know, I still am having trouble getting him in the room and follow the planned lesson and schedule. Not trying to force him, but eventually I had to. But, probably not now. Or maybe I have to slowly.

    We have no preparation prior this. We did the Fireman theme way back. Jadi disebabkan semua demam last week, tak sempat nak cover or refresh. So all Haris excited sangat was to ride the truck. Lol. Hana being moody her sebab tak cukup tidur. It was such a good experience. Though, next time, I hope that the kids were demonstrated of what to do if there is a fire and act it out. And padamkan api sebenar dalam tong ke. Exactly just like Upin Ipin. 🙂 InshaAllah, there’ll be another chance.

    April Week 1 & 2

    My plan utk stp hari is do a bit writing practice everyday, Reading BM using Bacalah Anakku, Reading English using BOB Books, messy play altenate with playing outside (swimming, walking), Math, Brain Quest for critical thinking and Hafazan.

    So untuk Bacalah Anakku, ni kali pertama perkenalkan Haris dengan bacaan BM and Alhamdulillah cepat dia pickup. Since he already has the phonics basic, utk huruf lain xde masalah cuma untuk pronounce vowel sahaja. Hope he won’t be confused, though.

    So he quickly breeze through Book 1. Looking forward to Book 2!

    Everything Else

    I use ABC handwriting practice sheets by Confessions of a Homeschooler. Love it. Sbb ada basic line practice incorporate with each letter.

    And handwriting readiness sheets by Donna Young.

    For Art & Craft we use ideas from Totally Tots for both Capital and Small Letter.

    Various weekly & monthly themes activities (for this month, focusing on himself and his surroundings) and Frozen related. =.=;

    We finally watched Frozen and now Haris is so into it. So we paint a snowman.

    Weekend, kami join aktiviti field trip to Taman Botani, Putrajaya called Junior Arborist with MHsN. After the half day hardwork, masha-Allah the taste of that lunch is unforgettable.

    Hana’s newly bought number boardbook. I love this book, seriously. It has colorful background, the number is big and clear enough and it has dots under there for counting.

    Hana’s pipe cleaner’s activities are inspired by Sugaraunts. She is only 14 months old and she only for like not even a minute and ke sana ke mari. Lol. Look at how she managed to put in and poke in 1 pipe cleaner.

    March Happening

    Hujung bulan musim cuti sekolah. So, macam-macam program utk kanak-kanak ada.

    Haris join program agama di PPAS.

    First day gi half day. Nanges. After that he’s OK. As long as dia x tgk me….

    I’m actually proud of him, despite of being attached to me 24/7, 7 days a week, sebenarnya dia boleh buat. He’s strong and can actually adapt in whatever situation. As long as dia x tgk me…

    Slow Week

    We are taking it a bit slow this week. Clearly, unschooling method really don’t work for us. At least not this time. It ended up taking a little bit more time to research and prepare. I maybe did it the wrong way, but I still think it doesn’t work for me and for him. And so I’m back to planning stages because previous setup doesn’t work for us because he missed his friends, being surrounded with his friends and all. Thoughts of giving up always come flashing in my mind. And hubby always says it’s OK. He is still young. But when that reflects his mood, it reflects my mood and the mood of the house. I’m still trying desperately to find weekdays program so he can mix with others but.. sigh. They’re always out of our town or only have weekend classes. Weekend is only for whole family to hangouts.

    Nevertheless, he can now reads cvc words. He completed Short A, Short E and Short I books from Progressive Phonics. We stopped with 100 Easy Lessons temporarily because he’s just not interested in it. But I still think that method is good and will be trying once again with him.

    Mathematics, he’s still working out on adding and subtraction and I introduced money to him this week. Started introducing him cents. Syiling 10 sen, 20 sen dan 50 sen. Kalau ada 5 keping 10 sen equals to 50 sen, something like that. And with that I set up our own stall with sweets and biscuits and price for each and from there on boleh ajar tambah dan tolak. Lepas tu pergi bawah and I let him ask the price, kira duit syiling dia dan bayar.

    Experiment with Egg

    Since I have a hard-boiled egg in the refrigerator, I thought that maybe we should try doing the bouncing ball experiment.

    While we’re at it, why not try the Naked Egg experiment!

    Then, we tested the strength of the shell by trying to squeeze the egg. I told him to squeeze with all his might. He hesitated at first. I showed him, and he eager to try and was amazed by how it did not break. 😀 Lepas tu, dia nak masak telur tu. OK then, he cracked it, beated it and masak~

    Bedtime Talk

    Last year, when Haris was in school (which means he was 3 turning 4), I often asked him during bedtime what he did at school, etc. We’ll talk about lots of things. The convo that I remembered most is, when I asked him was:

    “Mata untuk apa?” He answered something else I couldn’t recall.
    Then I closed his eyes and asked.
    “Nampak tak?”
    “Tak nampak! Untuk tengok mama!”
    “Telinga?” He answered something random again, then tutup telinga dia and I talked.
    He understands now and shouts “Untuk dengar!”

    “Good! Mulut?”
    “Makan!”
    “Hidung?”
    “Bau busuk!” =.=

    A Week Break

    Since there’s a guest in Haris room, we decided to take a week break. On Sunday, we went to 1001 Inventions at Pusat Sains Negara.

    On Wednesday, we went to PPAS for a sharing session by ByRoadtoMalaysia, organised by MHsN. We met many homeschoolers there. Walaupun banyak ketinggalan (Haris being fussy, Hana being busy) tapi banyak juga ilmu yang dapat, Alhamdulillah.

    This one day, rasanya hari Khamis, setelah lama tak ada “structured learning”, petang tu, tiba-tiba Haris masuk bilik dia, took out Math workbook and did the exercise himself! I was impressed, seriously. He asked for me not to look, tapi ada juga Haris datang dan bertanyakan macamana nak buat. When he finished, he went back to his room, took out other apparatus to do. After that, he went back again and took out pattern blocks. And did these by himself.
